Next step: Review your GEDCOM [17 December 2009]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Dan Lynch.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Living people in Gedcom [19 December 2009]

Please note that we do not create pages for living people in WeRelate. --Judy (jlanoux) 09:46, 17 December 2009 (EST)(WeRelate volunteer)

Thank you for uploading my initial GEDCOM. I have a question about living people however: in your message, you said that living people are not allowed on this site, which is why you excluded all of mine. However, I read in the documentation that it is OK to upload living people so long as they are marked as such, and the software will remove all their personal information. Can you clarify this disconnect? Thanks.--DanLynch 10:43, 17 December 2009 (EST)

We apologize for the confusion. The site is still in beta and things keep changing and evolving. Since living people load only with an empty page named something like "Living Smith" it was creating problems. It was determined that since they serve no function, we would exclude them and save a lot of clutter. Thank you for pointing out the problem with the documentation. The volunteers try to keep the documentation up to date but things can be missed. Can you tell me where you found the reference you mention? Thanks.--Judy (jlanoux) 11:55, 17 December 2009 (EST)
PS when leaving a message on a user's talk page, one should "Watch" the page so that you will see the reply. You don't have to go back to my page to respond.

Here is a link to one place where the documentation implies that living people can be added to the database: [1]--DanLynch 13:19, 19 December 2009 (EST)

Thank you for the pointer. I found and fixed two pages but they didn't appear to be the ones you referenced. I'll add a note here. --Judy (jlanoux) 14:17, 19 December 2009 (EST)

Dan Lynch.ged appears to overlap a previously-imported GEDCOM [17 December 2009]

The pages from this GEDCOM have not yet been generated because they appear to match pages from a GEDCOM you have previously imported to WeRelate.

If you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in this GEDCOM and you want to replace that tree with this GEDCOM, you need to delete that tree first so duplicates aren't created when you import this GEDCOM. Click on Trees in the "My Relate" menu, then click on the "delete" link next to that tree. Please be aware that any pages in the tree that are being watched by others won't get deleted. Once that tree is deleted you can create a new tree and re-upload this GEDCOM into it. (We're planning to make re-uploading GEDCOM files much simpler soon.)

If you don't think you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in this GEDCOM, or if the two GEDCOM's don't overlap that much, leave a message for Dallan or send an email to [email protected] and we'll go ahead with the import.

Delete and reupload [19 December 2009]

The message you got suggesting a re-upload didn't point out one thing...the search index isn't updated instaneously. So when you uploaded you got Family Matches to deleted pages. The index is usually updated in an hour so if you try this again, pausing before the upload will help avoid the extra Family Match work. --Judy (jlanoux) 18:36, 17 December 2009 (EST)

Thanks for the tip, Judy. Will waiting also prevent my name indexes from incrementing? What I mean by that is, is that now instead of being "John Smith (1)" all my records are now "John Smith (2)" or higher.--DanLynch 18:39, 17 December 2009 (EST)

That is the downside of deleting records. Those numbers are no longer available. For that reason I dislike deleting. I just load an updated gedcom and do the Family Match to pair up the existing people. One reason is that I like to use links when a person appears on someone else's page (for example, names in an obit.) So I don't want to be deleting them.
On the help menu is our support page. It was created for newcomers and forgetful oldies to have a place to ask questions about how things work. Feel free to use it. And I hope you enjoy WeRelate. --Judy (jlanoux) 20:54, 17 December 2009 (EST)

So what is the recommended way to re-upload your GEDCOM?--DanLynch 13:21, 19 December 2009 (EST)

Opinions will vary. The developer is working on a "reupload" process that will let you upload a refreshed gedcom and will automatically recognize pages that haven't changes. Then you will be able to work the family match for only those with new information. This will be nice.
Until then there are three possibilities:
  1. update the pages directly as you find information
  2. upload a new gedcom and use the Family Match tab to match to and update the existing pages (This is easiest with small gedcoms for only people with changes)
  3. delete your gedcom; wait an hour; load new gedcom. There are problems with this approach as we share our ancestors with others. You cannot delete people who are watched by others. And, as we have noted, the ids are destroyed so any links go dead. I dislike this approach, but others use it.

I find that the first option, directly editing the pages, is actually the easiest. --Judy (jlanoux) 14:17, 19 December 2009 (EST)
