Welcome and tips on entering data [6 May 2017]

Hello and welcome to WeRelate!
I am a volunteer administrator here and member of our WeRelate:Mentoring team. In looking over your recent entries, I noticed that some of the entries are not following our requested formatting. We understand that WeRelate takes a little getting used to, and this is a common mistake among new users. Luckily it is easy to fix. We ask that data is entered in a certain way (carefully and consistently), because WeRelate uses a common database. We want others to be able to find your information in order to evaluate family connections. Here are some basics:

  • Enter dates as DD-MMM-YYYY with no punctuation (ex. "10 Jan 1762" or "8 Dec 1640")
  • Enter places from small to large area as TOWN, COUNTY, STATE, COUNTRY. You want to make sure that the place entered results in a blue link when you have closed the page. The best way to do this is to enter some of the text (ex. "Campbell"), then pause to wait for the dropdown menu to appear, and then select the correct place from the dropdown list (ex. "Campbell, Kentucky, United States"). If, after you have saved and closed the page, you notice that the place link is red, instead of blue, then that means the text was not entered correctly. Please try to fix those links when that happens, so that your page will be properly connected.
  • Enter source citations - please remember to cite your sources for any information you are posting. It is best to stick to primary sources (i.e., vital records, wills, land records, censuses, etc.), but it is also ok to start a new page based on a secondary source, if that is all that you have so far. The important thing is just to make sure that you are telling others where your information is coming from.

I hope that you will enjoy working on your research here. Our volunteers are always happy to help. You can post questions directly on the "Talk" page of any specific page you are interested in, or here on your Talk page, or ask questions of a general nature on our Support page. Best Wishes, --cos1776 16:15, 6 May 2017 (UTC)

Another reminder about data formats [9 June 2017]

Thank you for working at WeRelate. We are glad you are here. Again, please remember to enter dates in our standard DD-MMM-YYYY format, with no punctuation (ex. "10 Jan 1762" or "8 Dec 1640"). Every time you do not follow this format, you are creating clean up work for our volunteers which keeps us from doing other more productive genealogy tasks. If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you, --cos1776 15:58, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

Search List resutl is not a source [10 June 2017]

Hi, Babo. You recently added the URL to a search results list to Person:Cynthia Montgomery (3), presumably as a source. Unfortunately, the list contained information for several different persons, not just Person:Cynthia Montgomery (3).

I presume you are simply copying and pasting as a means of being efficient for you. I can appreciate that some people value efficiency more than others and do not want to take the time to add more than the most minimal information in a source. However, there is a point where personal efficiency becomes discourtesy. Posting the URL to a search result is a case in point, since it requires other researchers to guess which of the many list options you were looking at. It would really take very little more time add, at the very least, the name and URL of the specific source you are referencing. This is not the best way to add a source, but it would at least avoid a display of discourtesy.--GayelKnott 14:36, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

Family:Andrew Lyon and Harriet Dunavent (1) [6 September 2017]

Hi, Babo,

I made some changed to Family:Andrew Lyon and Harriet Dunavent (1). It looked like you were having problems getting the Family Page to work properly. It was probably because you had Andrew as a female rather than a male. This is easy to do and I think we've all done it at least once. Hopefully the pages are now what you wanted. --GayelKnott 15:53, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

Need for Sources [11 September 2017]

Hi, Babo, I see you are creating a number of pages that have no sources. It is really important that you add sources for your information, so that other researchers can see that you are not just making stuff up. Sadly, there are people who do make things up and claim they are true. I doubt that you want to be considered one of them.

Also, if you add sources, then when there is conflicting information, as there was for your Martin Lyon and Susan Poole family and children, having the sources available makes it much easier to compare the information and sort out the confusion.

If you need help with adding sources, take a look at this help page; or you can always ask for help on the Support page. --GayelKnott 17:02, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
