Phillimore's Parish Register Series. Vol. CLXXXVII.

Lincolnshire Parish Registers.
Marriages.

Vol. VIII. (1912)

Edited by W. P. W. Phillimore, M.A., B.C.L., and Thos. M. Blagg, F.S.A.

Preface.

This volume contains the Marriage Registers of Boultham, Bracebridge and five of the most northern of the so-called “ Cliff ” villages ranging between Lincoln and Grantham. The Registers of Coleby, lying in the middle of this group are not included, because they already have been printed in full by the national “ Parish Register Society.”

Thanks are due to Canon R. E. G. Cole for making the abstracts of Boultham and Bracebridge, and to him and Canon C. W. Foster for helping to complete the Registers from the Transcripts of the Episcopal Registry and of the Dean and Chapter. The Editors also wish to convey their thanks to the various Incumbents for permission to print these Marriages. Their names are mentioned under their respective parishes.

The same contractions are used as in the earlier volumes of the series. {see volume 1}

It should be remembered that previous to 1752 the year was calculated as beginning on the 25th of March, instead of the 1st of January, so that a marriage taking place on say 20th February, 1625, would be on that date in 1626 according to our reckoning ; but as the civil and ecclesiastical year were both used this is sometimes expressed by 20th Feb., 1625/6. It should also be noted that in Lincolnshire Registers the years prior to 1600 were mostly reckoned from Michaelmas to Michaelmas ; and after that frequently from Easter to Easter, until the Feast of the Annunciation (Lady-day, 25th March) was generally adopted about the first quarter of the seventeenth century.

In all cases where the marriage is stated to have taken place by Licence that fact is recorded, as the searcher thereby knows that further information as to the age, parentage and vocation of the parties is probably recoverable from the Allegations in the Archdeaconry or other office from which the Licence was issued.

It might be well to remind the reader that these printed abstracts of the Registers are not legal “ evidence.” For certificates application must be made to the local clergy.

Further subscribers are still urgently needed in order to ensure the continuance of the series, as the number of those who give their practical support is very small, and unfortunately compares unfavourably with other counties.
