Arms.—Quarterly, first and fourth, az. three pelicans ar. vulning themselves, ppr. second and third, gu. two demi belts, paleways, the buckles in chief, ar. as an honourable augmentation, in memory of Sir John Pelham, taking John, King of France, prisoner.

Sir John Pelham, Knt., was one of the persons who took John, King of France, prisoner, at the battle of Poictiers, 19th Sept. 30th Edward III. 1358 ; and, in memory of that king surrendering his sword, had the buckle of a belt for a badge of that honour ; Esquire of the body of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, knighted 24th Edward III. 1368, bu. in Canterbury-cathedral.

Sir John Pelham, only son, appointed, by John of Gaunt, constable of Pevensey-castle for life, by patent, 17th Richard II. knight of the Bath, at the coronation of Henry IV. 13th Oct. 1399 ; made sword-bearer before the king for life, by patent, 24th Oct. and had the constableship of Pevensey-castle to him and his heirs, male, by patent, 12th Feb. 1st Henry IV. ; sheriff of Sussex, 2d Henry IV. ; chief butler of the port of Chichester, 9th Henry IV. ; privy counsellor and ambassador in France, 1st Henry V. ob. 1429.
