[edit] Related[edit] BackgroundPerson:John Hays (21) died about 1778 in Augusta County, VA. His estate entered probate on 17 Feb 1778, identifying his wife as Rebecca. A search of Ancestry public Member Trees using "John Hays" d 1778, yielded 250 trees citing a 1778 DOD. Virtually all of those trees (97%)gave a POD as Augusta. Of these 12% gave the exact date of 17 Feb 1778, and 91% gave the DOD as Feb 1778. It seems likely that all were based on the 1778 probate date in Augusta County. This might indicate that there was more than one John Hays dying in 1778, but it seems unlikely that there would be multiple John Hays dying in the same year in the same county. Rather, it would seem that virtually all of these trees are using the same probate date as the DOD for "their John Hays". This is reinforced by the fact that most of these trees also identify the same persons as the father (John Hays) and mother (Rebecca) of John Hays (21). Given that, it is particularly interesting that seven distinct persons were identified as the wife of John (21) only 3 of which identified his wife as a "Rebecca" (See tabulation below):
It might be that the 1778 DOD for John (21) is actually the DOD for his father John (20), especially since his wife was also named Rebecca. However, John (20) is well documented as having died in 1750. It rather seems as if people tracing their descent from a John Hays= various spouses, have appropriated the 1778 DOD for John (21)=Rebecca. [edit] Barbara KingFrom:Ancestry
