About Volda

Volda is both the name of a municipality and a village. The village is situated on the eastern side of the Voldsfjord, near the north-eastern border of the municipality. The Voldsfjord splits into the Austefjord (meaning eastern fjord) to the south-east and the Dalsfjord (meaning valley fjord) to the south-west. The area around the latter constituted a separate municipality (Dalsfjord) from 1924 to 1964.

The village of Volda is the largest in the municipality, and a large portion of the 8.889 inhabitants (2013) lives in or around there. Several other smaller villages and farms are situated in the village, see left.

The municipality has strong cultural and academic traditions, and is the home of the oldest university college and the oldest high school in Norway outside of a major city.
