Malton Rural District was an administrative division of the North Riding of Yorkshire based on the town of Malton. The district spread north, west and south from the town (which was sometimes separated into Old and New Malton). The southeastern boundary of the North Riding of Yorkshire was the River Derwent on which Malton is situated. Norton, or Norton on Derwent, and its rural district, across the river, were in the East Riding.

Since the municipal reorganization of 1974, the area covered by Malton Rural District has been located in the administrative District of Ryedale, North Yorkshire. Also, since 1974, Norton, or Norton on Derwent, and its rural district are also in the Ryedale District of North Yorkshire.
