A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Henderskelf from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-1872):

"HENDERSKELF, a township in Bulmer parish, [North Riding of] Yorkshire; 6 miles W by S of New Malton. Acres: 1,620. Real property: £1,359. Population: 157. Houses: 27. See Castle-Howard."

Castle Howard was built in the grounds of the ruins of Henderskelf Castle.

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Henderskelf was located in Malton Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ecclesiastical parish of Bulmer in the Bulmer Wapentake.
