Township of Aubry

Aubry is a civil township situated in the southeastern corner of the county of Johnson, state of Kansas, United States of America. It was originally bounded on the north by the township of Oxford, on the east by the state of Missouri (including the county of Cass and townships of Mount Pleasant and Union), on the south by the county of Miami (including the townships of Wea and Ten Mile), and on the west by the townships of Spring Hill and Olathe. Beginning in 1994, portions of its territory have been annexed into the incorporated city of Overland Park.

History

Aubry was one of the eight original civil townships erected at a meeting of the county commissioners on 28 October 1857 after the county was erected in 1855. Aubry was organized by the county commissioners on 11 May 1858, but it was extensively settled by claim-takers in 1857. The first claim was taken by William H. Brady on 22 February 1857. The new civil township encompassed parts of townships 14 and 15 south, of ranges 24 and 25 east of the Sixth Principal Meridian.

The Black Bob branch of the Shawnee tribe, under the chieftainship of Black Bob, claimed the township with a portion of Oxford township as their particular reservation. When the treaty of 1854 was effected by which members of the tribe were to select 200 acres of land each and the balance of the reservation to be opened to settlement, this band refused to accept the proffer of individual or head rights, preferring to hold their land in common. Accordingly, some thirty-three thousand acres were set apart for their use without being divided into head rights. This tract included the entire north half of Aubry township.

The first township election was held 22 May 1858 when Mr. Brady was elected chairman of the board of supervisors, Burton Olney, treasurer, and William W. Rice, clerk. Also A.J. Gabbart, B.F. Snyder, A. Gamble, and Greenbury Trekle were elected justices of the peace.
