English WP assertions about this person [10 January 2012]

The English WP entry for Werner (Salian) asserts that his mother was sister to Conrad I of Germany. Do we believe this? --jrm03063 16:12, 9 January 2012 (EST)

It seems to be based on this, which in turn references genealogie-mittelalter.de. The latter used to be a pretty high quality genealogy database, but this seems to have gone offline now.

The reference used in the German Wikipedia article is Rüdiger E. Barth, Der Herzog in Lotharingien im 10. Jahrhundert (1990) and Detlev Schwennicke, Europäische Stammtafeln Neue Folge Band I. 1 (1998).

As with most people of the period, there is nothing certain about the genealogy of Werner V, but these authors express the following opinions:

  • Barth says that Werner died after 935 and may have been married to Hicha von Schwaben, d. after 950, daughter of Burchard II.
  • Schwennicke says that Werner died ca. 920 and was married to an unnamed Konradinerin (presumably a daughter of Conrad the Elder, i.e. a sister or half-sister of Conrad I?)

Both authors agree that Werner is an ancestor (father?) of Conrad the Red.

I wonder if they are even talking about the same Werner? There seem to have been at least five Werners, of which the fifth and last is the only one that has any historical tangibility. We must assume from his numeral that his father was one "Werner IV", but we know nothing else. It seems that historians solve this crux by assuming that "Werner VI" is the same person as Walaho IV even though Werner and Walaho are two unrelated names. --Deeb 03:56, 10 January 2012 (EST)

I defer to your analysis, I just wondered whether we should create the link suggested by the English wikipedia article or not. If not, we should at least put a note on the person page, tagged to the WP source, indicating that the represented connection is in dispute.--jrm03063 10:46, 10 January 2012 (EST)
