Person:Zachariah Bates (1)

Based on the 1860 census^[2], it appears that Zachariah and Madison were the sons of Elmina Bates. Zachariah was living in the household of Adam and Margaret Bates in 1850^[1], and in Margaret's household in 1870^[3], but if Margaret's age in the 1850 census (51)^[1] is to be believed, then she was too old to be his mother.

The exact nature of the relationship between Elmina Bates and Adam and Margaret Bates is unclear, but there is a good possibility that Zachariah and Madison were the grandchildren of either Adam or Margaret. Adam and Margaret may have formally adopted the children (or just Madison) or simply taken them in as necessary (Zachariah temporarily in 1850 and then both after 1860).
