The exact nature of the relationship between Elmina Bates and Adam and Margaret Bates is unclear. She may have been the daughter or daughter-in-law of one of them, or some other relation such as niece. Adam and Margaret had Elmina's son Zachariah in their household in the 1850 census, and Margaret had both of Elmina's children in the 1870 census. She may have adopted them (or just Madison, whom she called "son" in the 1880 census).
