His younger siblings all emigrated to the United States. As first-born, he remained in Russia to help his father Kapel look after the family business (flour mill). Listed as Yankel (little Yaakov or Jacob) in the revision lists. Father's name, Kapel, is also a version of the name Jacob. Yaakov and his wife both appear in the Yad Vashem list of Holocaust victims. They appear to have died at Dautmergen - Schoemberg camp in Germany.

"The Dautmergen - Schoemberg camp was a forced labor camp, among whose internees were Jews from Vilnius (Vilna) and its surroundings, as well as from other Lithuanian cities and from Belorussia. The majority of the camp's victims were Jews."
