One of seven children born to Karl Kovarsky and his first wife, name unknown (possibly Pauline), who died at age 30 ca. 1883 delivered of her eighth child who also died due to lack of a wet nurse. Siblings were first born boy who stayed in Russia (descendants disappeared in Holocaust), Henry who came to America as Henry Nathan, Sophie, Rose, Eva, Sam and Hyman who all took the surname Nathan when they followed Henry to America. Both Sam and Hyman went to South Africa before coming to the United States. According to the 1910 federal census, Hyman had immigrated to the United States in 1908 and in 1910 was boarding with the family of his sister Eva and was listed as a "dealer in eggs."

Lived with sister and brother-in-law in 1910. The building at 310 W. 120th Street has been demolished. Census indicates 10 families in residence here; presumably a 5-story walkup tenement, with 2 apartments per floor.

- ↑ His World War I draft registration card gave his birth date as 21 Apr 1881. His World War II draft registration card gave his birth date as 21 Apr 1883 as does the NY death index. In the United States federal census of 1910 where he was listed as a boarder in the home on W 120 St in Manhattan of his brother-in-law, Sam Elkin [sic], wife, Becky (nickname or misunderstanding) and daughter Pauline (age 1--correct), his age was listed as 28. Also his mother died in childbirth ca. 1883 delivered of her eighth child, who was not he.
