One of seven children born to Karl Kovarsky and his first wife, name unknown (possibly Pauline), who died at age 30 ca. 1883 delivered of her eighth child who also died due to lack of a wet nurse. Siblings were first born boy who stayed in Russia (descendants disappeared in Holocaust), Henry who came to America as Henry Nathan, Sophie, Rose, Eva, Sam and Hyman who all took the surname Nathan when they followed Henry to America. Both Sam and Hyman went to South Africa before immigrating to the United States. The 1910 federal census, where he was listed as a boarder in the home of his sister Rosie Zimmerman and family on W 121st Street in Manhattan, gave his age as 29, his profession as salesman of wholesale eggs, his status as naturalized citizen and his immigration year as 1900.
