According to my father (Charles P. Malone), his father, Woodrow, never spoke a kind word about his father, Otho Malone. That observation seems to be substantiated by other family members.

When Woodrow's Mother left his Father, Woodrow went to live with the Smiths (his sister's (Doris) husband's family) until he was a freshman in high school. He didn't have anything. He went to school barefooted. Woodrow's half-brother, Richard Stiles, had to lend Woodrow some clothes that he could wear to his graduation.

After Woodrow graduated, he moved to Holbrook, Arizona where he got a job driving a transfer truck. There wasn't much money in it, but at least he had a job. Then he got a job at the Ford Motor Co. and became the manager of that. Ford sold out and he was again out of a job. Next he went to work for Coca Cola. He became the manager of the plant and the owner, Mike Purcell, told Woodrow that he would take care of him if he would just build the business up, which he did. Then Purcell sold the plant and left Woodrow out in the cold with nothing. Woodrow worked with the new owners for a while but couldn't adjust to their business methodology. So he and his wife, Dorothy left Holbrook and moved to Tucson, Arizona.

According to Richard Stiles, Woodrow worked hard to build up the Coke business in Holbrook. He would take the Coke truck and drive to the Indian Reservation. He soon developed a loyal following and business started to boom as the reservation business boomed.

Woodrow became a volunteer firefighter for the Holbrook, Navajo Co., Arizona fire department. He became fire chief in 1949 and has also served as President of the Arizona State Fireman's Association. He left Holbrook for four years and was appointed fire chief again in 1958.
