Winifred George was born 18 Jun 1754 in Lancaster County, Virginia the daughter of William and Winifred George. She married, as her first husband, Thomas Gilliam (born 22 Oct 1750; died 25 May 1793), a son of William Gilliam and his wife, Mary (Jarratt) Gilliam. They resided in Botetourt County, Virginia before settling in what is now Knox County, Tennessee. They were accompanied in settling in Knox County by the family of Thomas Gilliam's brother, Devereux Gilliam. Thomas Gilliam, and their son, James, were slain by the Cherokee on 25 May 1793.
Winifred Gilliam was appointed administrator of the estate of her deceased husband, Thomas Gilliam, in November, 1793 (Knox County, Tennessee Court, Settlements and Wills, Volume 1, July 1792-October 1811, pages 11, 13). Thomas and Winifred Gilliam had the following children: James; William; Spencer; Elizabeth, the wife of Isaac Osborn; Mary, the wife of Thomas Frazier; Sarah, the wife of Frederick Fraker; Martha, the wife of John Murphy; and Delilah, the wife of Alexander Murphy.
Winifred (George) Gilliam was married 28 Jan 1797 (marriage bond) in Knox County, Tennessee to Basil Human. They had three children: James G. Human; Solomon G. Human; and Anna (Human) Crank. Her family opposed her marriage to the younger man. Their opposition appears to have been well-founded as he subsequently left Winifred for a younger woman, Jemima (Galloway) Gilliam, the widow of Winifred's son, Spencer Gilliam. They never divorced, but Basil Human spent the remainder of his life with Jemima and they had a family of their own in Morgan County, Tennessee. Winifred left East Tennessee following this scandal and settled in Gibson County, where her daughter, Anna (Human) Crank, settled with her husband, Thomas Crank.
