From his study of the Archives, Colin Kerr was led to remark - "Father was no help at all. He seemed possessedby the spirit of indolence, and spent all his time sitting on the poop, looking, as the mate observed, 'like Patience on a leecat-head grinning at a wet swab'. He became immensely corpulent......... Henry wrote sadly (of both his parents) that it was like having two extra children on their hands, children 'whom we cannot control but must manage the best way we can.'"
