William Ward was born on 17th June 1811 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, son of Ann Ward, formerly Allam, and her husband Luke Ward, a carpenter.

On 18th October 1831, aged 20, William married Mary Everard at the neighbouring parish of Heckington. They returned to Great Hale after their marriage, having eight children baptised there between 1833 and 1847, although two died young and another died as a young woman of 23.

William's maternal grandfather, John Allam, died in 1841, and William was left a house at Mill Yard in Great Hale in his grandfather's will. The 1841 census finds William, Mary and their children living at Mill Yard, with William working as a shoemaker. William's father died in 1844.

By 1850 William and his family had moved just around the corner from Mill Yard to the Rose and Crown Inn on West Street. They appear in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses there with William described as both a victualler and a cordwainer. William's mother died in 1857.

The 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses each find William and Mary living at an unspecified location in Great Hale, although as William was no longer described as a publican it may be reasonable to conclude they had left the Rose and Crown.

William died on 11th September 1894 at Great Hale, aged 83. Mary survived him by three years.
