Mary Everard was baptised on 25th August 1811 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, daughter of a farmer called Richard Everard and his wife Mary.

By 1831 Mary was living in the neighbouring parish of Heckington. She was married there on 18th October 1831, aged 20, to a shoemaker (or cordwainer) called William Ward. He was also from Great Hale, and they returned there after their marriage, having eight children baptised there between 1833 and 1847, although two died young and another died as a young woman of 23.

The 1841 census finds the family living at Mill Yard in Great Hale. By 1850 they had moved just around the corner to the Rose and Crown Inn on West Street. They appear in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses there with William described as both a victualler and a cordwainer.

The 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses each find Mary and William living at an unspecified location in Great Hale, although as William was no longer described as a publican it may be reasonable to conclude they had left the Rose and Crown.

William died in 1894 at Great Hale, aged 83. Mary survived him by three years. Towards the end of her life she lived at Swineshead, a couple of miles east of Great Hale, where she appears to have died in 1898, aged 86. She was buried back at Great Hale on 14th February 1898.
