William was a Civil War veteran, in Company B and C of the 6th NY Heavy Artillery. enlisting 3/2/1864 at the age of 15 at Tarrytown, NY. His brothers James and Uriah were in the same regiment, Company C. William's father George had to certify that William was 18, which he did in writing, which is on file at the National Archives. He went through the Wilderness campaign at the James River and was wounded July 3 by a bullet, on the Welden Railroad.
