Hannah was said by her descendants to have been a full-blooded Mohawk Indian. However, her mother's name of Anna Barton does not lend support to this.

A more likely theory is that the surname was once Hawxhurst and Hannah's ancestor was a Loyalist who fled to Canada and never returned. For that reason the family abbreviated the name to Hawks in order to denounce the association.

She and her husband lived in Emerson, NJ, where they ran the Hotel Emerson.
