1875 March 14, Troy, Iowa. Samantha "Mattie" Vorhis Crumrine wrote her cousin Jane Love: "I wrote all about our family in the first letter I wrote to Uncle after I came home / perhaps you did not read it / if so have forgotten it. Martha was 37 the 28 day of Jan / William R was 35 the 22 of October but he doesnt look near that old / he favors Cousin Evan Watts more then he does his brothrs / the other tow boys have black eyes and black hair and he has blue eyes and Sanda hair / very fine and curly / Martha read your letter and told him you said he was ugly and he said tell you the reason you never married you dident know a good looking man so never found one to suit you"

1890 Oct. 23, Troy, Iowa. Ada Tharp wrote her cousin Jane Love: "We had abirthday dinner yesterday / Uncle William Reeces and Johnnie Vorhis and one of our neighbor boys as they were all on the same day. Johnnie is Uncle Sylvesters boy. We has a good dinner and a Good time / wish you could of been here. They wer 45 here."

1892 Jan. 6, Troy, Iowa. Ada Tharp wrote her cousin Jane Love: "This leaves us all much better than we were. Uncle William Reece is so he can get out and help attend to the stock. For a long time I had to do his work and the house work too. Aunt is so she can help wash the dishes. Grandma is about as well as common no comlaint only her eyes."
