1870 March 5, Will of Sarah Jones, Hamilton Co., OH; beneficiaries include: "To my neice [sic] Martha Melvina Voorheis Daughter of Mary Vorhis $25.00 Twenty five Dollars . . . to draw legal intrest from my Death untill the Farm is Sold." (Elizabeth Jones Wyckoff sold the farm and personal property in 1887 and moved to Mason, Warren Co., OH.)

1875 March 14, Troy, Iowa. Samantha "Mattie" Vorhis Crumrine wrote her cousin Jane Love: "I have the good company of tow Sisters when at home [Martha Melvina and Celestia Jane] / one is Married / she and her family went to kansas last faul ayear / was eaten out by the grasshoppers in the sumer and had to move back home / I cant tell if they will stay in the house with us all summer or not / he is trying to rent a farm to tend this Summer . . . I wrote all about our family in the first letter I wrote to Uncle after I came home / perhaps you did not read it / if so have forgotten it. Martha was 37 the 28 day of Jan"

1891 Jan. 29, Troy, Iowa. Ada Tharp wrote her cousin Jane Love: "Aunt is piecing Aunt Janes oldest boy a quilt. it is called the drooping lilly. . . . We had a pleasant time at Grandmas dinner / they was'nt anybody here only relations. Aunt Cemantha gave her apron. Aunt Cemanthas man gave her a nice flanel skirt. Aunt Jane apron. Aunt Melisa [Melvina?] apron. Mary Shield apron / Garrett Tharp ahnkerchief. Tilda & Cindarilla Tharp a pair of shoes. all of the children and Soninlaws was here. except Uncle Glocester Vorhis. and Aunt Hannah E. Ernst / she lives in Missouri."

1891 March 24, Troy, Iowa. Ada Tharp wrote her cousin Jane Love: "Aunt will send you a quilt patter by the next time I write / She has pieced three quilts like it. One for my Sister and one for my cousin Aunt Janes boy. And one for her self. It is called the drooping Lilly / it makes a very pretty quilt."

1891 Sept. 1, Troy, Iowa. Ada Tharp wrote her cousin Jane Love: "This leaves us all well But Aunt Mina / she strained her hip las week and has hardly been able to do any thing. but is a good deal better. . . . Aunt is going too send you the quilt patterns she promised to send so long ago, one is the home stead the other the drooping lilly. . . . We will send the patterns by their selves."

1892 Oct. 20, Troy, Iowa. Ada Tharp wrote her cousin Jane Love: "Aunt is quilting a quilt and it keeps us busy to do the work. She will weave a carpet for my Sister as soon as she gets the quilt out."

1892 Dec. 10, Troy, Iowa. Ada Tharp wrote her cousin Jane Love: "Dear Jane much thanks for your nice quilt block, / Aunt will send you and Lillie and Guy some name cards." We incorrectly had Martha's name as Martha Melina, but she signed her letters, Martha Melvina.
