According to the Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy, William Vest bought land from James Bowles on 13 March 1792 in Stokes County, North Carolina. He later moved to Tennessee. There is also a reference to William Vest in a copy of "Stokes County, North Carolina Will Abstracts", volumes I and II (1790 to 1816), which was compiled and indexed by Mrs. W. O. Absher and Mrs. Robert K. Hayes, and was found in the Fort Smith (Arkansas) Public Library and included in the 1981 Sallie DeWitt Genealogy. The Will of William Vest (#138) is dated 26 July 1812, and gives details of bequests to wife Lucy and nine children. The children are Samuel, William, Charles, Isham, John, Mary, Polly, Jane, and Elizabeth. A copy of the abstract was obtained in December 2005 via email from Mary Jo Martin (jomartin1@@worldnet.att.net). The actual will was dated July 26, 1812 and was found in the Danbury Courthouse, Stokes Co., NC. The Abstract of the will of William Vest stated the following: Wife Lucy, Sons, Samuel, William, Charles, Isham and John, Daughters, Mary, wife of Philip Southerland, Martha (Patty) Wife of Jacob Misena, Jennie (Jane) wife of Thomas Bennett, Elizabeth, wife of John Sizemore and Anna wife of James Densmore, married in 1818. Ann received a featherbed and furniture according to the will. John and Charles were named Executors. Lucy/Lucretia Vest made a covenant to leave the property left her by her late husband William Vest, to her son John Vest. Evidently he cared for her in her old age. References
