He married Susan Myers, daughter of George and Margaret Myers, in 1817 in Nicholas Co., Kentucky; and Zerelda Owings (1812-1894), daughter of Samuel Owings and Mary Ann 'Polly' Hopkins, in 1851 in Indiana. Zerelda was the widow of John Gray, who she married in 1830/1838.

 In the 1850 census for Dearborn Co., Indiana, William Stoops is 56, farmer from PA; with Susannah 53 KY; Sarah 20; Benjamin 1833; and Andrew 1835.
 In the 1860 census for Clay, Dearborn Co., Indiana, William Stoops is 66, farmer from Pennsylvania; with 'Serelda' 49 Kentucky; [her daughter] Rachel Gray 17 KY; [their daughter] Susan 6 IN; [his sons] Benjamin 26 KY; Andrew 24 KY; and Joseph T. 28 KY. {p. 228 roll 252 HeritageQuest}

 NOTE: I have not found any of his sons after 1860. It is possible that the Elizabeth Stoops, age 28, with son Harry 12, listed in 1870 with James Vandolah in Dearborn Co. was the widow of one of the sons. However, Harry shows his birthplace as New Jersey.
 According to some sources, Sarah Stoops married Ephraim Owings and had 10 children, including James Andrew 1864.  In the 1880 census for Turman, Sullivan Co., Indiana, Ephraim Owings is 50 MO (KY, KY) with Sarah 46 KY.
