According to various sources, Zerelda was the daughter of Samuel Owings and Mary 'Polly' Hopkins. She first married John Willis Gray ( ) in 1830 and had children William, James H., Mary Jane, Richard, Eliza, and Rachel. She married William Stoops in 1851; and her brother Ephraim married William's daughter Sarah in 1851 -- his third wife. 

 In the 1870 census Zerelda [indexed as Zenelda] Stoops is 58 KY, widow with daughter Susan 16 IN.
 In the 1880 census for Clay, Dearborn Co., Indiana, she is listed as 'stepmother' Ceralda Stoops 68 in the household of James H. Gray, 47 KY 'blacksmith'.
