A portrait of William Smith of Carbeth Guthrie (1787 Glasgow-1871 Kirknewton (Midlothian, though was buried at Strathblane, according to "Provosts of Glasgow")) by John Graham Gilbert was lent to Old Glasgow Exhibition by William Archibald Smith; William succeeded to Carbeth on the death of his cousin John Guthrie (1768 Baldernock-1834 Devon). John Guthrie was nephew of John Smith of Craigend, who was brother of Archibald Smith of Jordanhill (Exhibition catalogue).
