Of Jordanhill. Glasgow merchant. FRS 1838. Distinguished geologist and Biblical Critic. Author of “Voyage and shipwreck of St. Paul”. Died Jordanhill 17jan1867. Brother of 5952, 7338. Father of 12245 (mat). James Smith FRS, FRSE, FRGS (15aug1782 Jordanhill House, Glasgow-17jan1867 Jordanhill) was son of Archibald Smith, West India merchant, and Isobel Euing (d. 1855, aged 101). James Smith married 1809 Mary Wilson (d. 1847, granddaughter of Alexander Wilson, Professor of Astronomy, Glasgow University) (A. Duncan, rw). Alexander Wilson (1714 St. Andrews-1786) was professor of Astronomy at Glasgow from 1760 (web). Scottish archives have the will of James Smith of Jordanhill, Co. Renfrew, d. 17jan1867 at Jordanhill (sp). The 1868 Exhibition Catalogue has a photo of the portrait of No. 311 James Smith of Jordanhill, FRS, FRSE, FGS (1782 Glasgow-1867 Jordanhill), mercht in Glasgow (illus). A portrait by Sir John Watson Gordon of James Smith of Jordanhill, FRS, FGS, FRSE (1782 Glasgow-1867 Jordanhill) was lent to the Old Glasgow Exhibition 1894 by Mrs. James George Smith. James married Mary, daughter of Alexander Wilson. James was son of Archibald Smith of Jordanhill (1749 Craigend, Stirlingshire-1821 Jordanhill), West India merchant. James was President of the Geological and Archaeological Societies of Glasgow (og). In 1841 James Smith (b. 1782, Lanarks., independent) and Isabella McCall (1786, Lanarks., independent) and 5 servants were at Ibrox Hill, Govan (ce).
