Notes
- We have been unable to identify him on the 1850 or the 1860 Federal Census, although we have found him on the 1865 and 1875 New York State Census.
- Because we find him married late in life to a woman 25 years younger than he is, we are suspicious as to if the children were his or belonged to his wife's first husband, if indeed she was married earlier. He states on the 1865 Brooklyn Census that this is his second marriage and his much younger wife states that it is her first marriage.
Family Tradition
- According to family tradition William E was an inventor who had a patent for an improvement to the breech-loading cannon. Unable to sell or otherwise make money off his patent he traveled to Prussia and sold his idea for an unknown sum of money to Krupp Manufacturing, the well known arms manufacturer in Germany. It is said that due to the cold weather, Mr. Krupp gave William E a heavy winter coat with gold buttons. After he returned to the United States, his brother Thomas stole his gold buttons!
- In an attempt to confirm this family tradition we have found a copy of patent# 11678 dated 12 Sep 1854, a copy of his passport application dated 1 Mar 1855 and a copy of a ship log showing his return trip from Hamburg, Germany dated 27 Jan 1856. On each of these documents is an identical large, flowing very distinctive signature. Although these documents tie in with family oral history, we unfortunately have no documentation actually tying in the William E Osborn in these documents with our William E Osborne of Brooklyn and Rochester. Also, we have been unable to come up with a signature from our confirmed William E Osborn to compare to the earlier signatures.
