The trip took approximaely two months. William was a miner and became Superintendent of Mines in Shullsburg, Wiota, Galena and Mineral Point, Wisconsin. He mined for 19 years and then in 1867 purchased a farm just north of Mineral point in Plum Grove district. William and Maria were both very religious and very strict, belonging to the old-fashioned Primitive Methodist Church of Mineral Point. He was a very large and tall man, habitually wearing a large silk stovepipe hat. Maria was a very small woman and could walk under William's outstretched arm.
