William Moles was baptised on 30th November 1777 at Stotfold in Bedfordshire, son of Susan Moles (whose maiden name was also Moles) and her husband Richard Moles.

    HIS MAJESTY'S Thirty Seventh REG[IMEN]T OF Foot
    Whereof General Sir Charles Green Bar[one]t is Colonel.
    These are to Certify,
    I. Age and Enlistment.
    THAT Serjeant Major W[illia]m Moles born in the Parish of Stotfold in near the Town of Itchen [sic] in the County of Bedford was enlisted for the aforesaid Regiment at Enfield in the County of Middlesex on the 4th Day of January 1796 at the Age of Eighteen for unlimited Service
    II. Service.
    THAT he hath served in the Army for the space of 31 Years and 143 Days, after the Age of Eighteen, according to the subjoined STATEMENT OF SERVICE.
    CORPS:
    39th Foot - From 25th December 1795 To 24th January 1803 - 7 years 31 days as Private
    37th Foot - From 25th January 1803 to 16 May 1827 - 363 days as Private, 2 years 160 days as Corporal, 9 years 13 days as Serjeant and 11 years 326 days as Serjeant Major, including service "In East or W. Indies" from 8th February 1800 to 19th July 1809
    III. Authorty and Cause of Discharge.
    THAT by Authority of the Commander of the Forces dated Dublin 7th May 1827 HE IS HEREBY DISCHARGED in consequence of length of service, and being worn out
    IV. Not disqualified for Pension
    THAT he is not to my knowledge, incapacitated by the Sentence of a General Court Martial, from receiving Pension.
    V. Character, &c. &c. &c.
    THAT his general Conduct as a Soldier has been particularly good during the whole period of his Service
    VI. Settlement of all Demands.
    THAT he has received all just Demands of Pay, Clothing, &c. from his Entry into the Service to the date of this Discharge, as appears by his Receipt underneath.
    VII. Acknowledgement of the Receipt of all Demands.
    I W[illia]m Moles do hereby acknowledge that I have received all my Clothing, Pay, Arrears of Pay, and all just Demands whatsoever, from the time of my Entry into the Service to the time of this Discharge.
    VIII.
    To prevent any improper use being made of this Discharge, by its falling into other Hands, the following is a Description of the said Serjeant Major William Moles
    He is about Forty nine Years of Age, is 5 Feet 11¾ Inches in height, D[ar]k Brown Hair, Hazle [sic] Eyes, Dark Complexion and by Trade or Occupation a Labourer
    ...under my Hands, and the Seal of the Regiment, at Cork this 9th Day of May 1827
    [Note on reverse lists summary of the above information, but also says "Quebec, Canada". Not clear what this indicates - perhaps where William went to live after leaving the army?]
