Richard Moles' origins are unknown. His first sighting is on 15th July 1775, when he married Susan Moles at Stotfold in Bedfordshire. As they shared a surname, they may have been distantly related, although a connection has yet to be found.

Richard and Susan stayed in Stotfold, having five children baptised there between 1776 and 1783, although three of them died young. Richard died in 1783, leaving Susan a widow at the age of 34.
