William Lewis was baptised on 16th May 1784 at Willen in Buckinghamshire, son of Sarah Lewis, formerly Northern, and her husband Thomas Lewis, a labourer. In 1793, when William was eight years old, his mother died.

On 15th May 1811, aged 26, William married Mary Landon at Willen. They went on to have a son, also called William, baptised at Willen the following December. They have yet to be traced after young William's baptism.

   Baptisms 1784: William son of Tho[ma]s & Mary Lewis May 16

   Although this baptism gives William's parents as Thomas and Mary it is considered likely that there is a mistake in the register and his parents were actually Thomas and Sarah. There appears to be no other instance of a Thomas and Mary couple in Willen at this time, whereas there are plenty of sightings of Thomas and Sarah, but with a significant gap around this time between their previous child in 1781 and their next in 1790.
