William Nessly Groff was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. According to the Talbot family history, he was in the service of the Egyptian government as a translator of 32 languages, authored many historical and antiquarian works in the Oriental and French languages, and was the only American member of the Royal Egyptian Institute.William died in 1901 in Athens, Greece.
