William M. Dugger was born ca 1781/1782 (per 1850 census) in Brunswick Co., VA. I don’t know what his middle initial stands for, but I would guess “Morris” after his mother. On 17 Jan 1800 Jesse Rainey, William Dugger, Frances Rainey and James Dugger witnessed a deed from John Wilroy Mallory to Daniel Dugger. (Brunswick Co., VA Deed Book 17 page 525). On 23 Oct 1804 William Dugger married Jean Stainback in Mecklenburg Co., VA. They were 1st cousins, she being a child of George Stainback and Louisa Dugger. On 20 Apr 1805 Daniel Dugger deeded land to William Dugger for $1.00, on east side of Gravelly Run. (Brunswick Co., VA Deed Book 19 page 272). William was listed on the 1810 census in Brunswick Co., VA. Analysis:
On1 5 Jan 1810 Daniel Dugger Sr deeded 112 acres to William Dugger. Witnesses were Benjamin Morris, James Dugger and Daniel Dugger. (Brunswick Co., VA Deed Book 21 page 192). In Jan 1811 John Dugger (William’s brother) chose William M. Dugger to be his guardian. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 24 page 114). William M. Dugger was named in the Nov 1811 court record listing the heirs of Daniel Dugger, deceased.(Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 24 page 357). William M. Dugger was named in the Jan 1812 court record showing the division of the estate of Daniel Dugger. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 24 page 514). William M. Dugger was bondsman for the 13 Oct 1813 Brunswick County marriage bond of Benjamin Marshall and Sally S. Dugger (William’s sister). William M. Dugger was bondsman for the 22 Dec 1814 Brunswick County marriage bond of James Dugger (William’s brother) and Elizabeth W. Lucas. In Mar 1815 court, William M. Dugger was security for Richmond Dugger to be administrator for Benjah Saxon’s Estate. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 26 page 243). On 4 Aug 1817 John Dugger of Petersburg sold William Dugger of Brunswick 45 acres bordering Mary Dugger, Elizabeth Stainback and William M. Dugger for $180. Witnessed by James Rawlings, John D. Kirby, John B. Rice. (Brunswick Co., VA Deed Book 24 page 138). William M. Dugger was listed on the 1820 census in Brunswick Co., VA with a very full household. Analysis:
On 12 Dec 1829 George Stainback of Brunswick of the 1st part; William M. Dugger of Brunswick of the 2nd part; and Daniel Dugger, John Dugger and Henry Dugger of Town of Petersburg of the 3rd part made a mortgage deed amongst themselves. (Brunswick Co., VA Deed Book 28 page 310). William M. Dugger was listed on the 1830 census in Brunswick Co., VA. Analysis:
During the 1830's William and family moved to Alabama. Daniel Dugger made his Will on 6 Nov 1837 and named his brother William in Alabama. (Brunswick Co., VA Will Book 13 page 204). I wasn’t able to find William M. Dugger on the 1840 census. William was on the 1850 census in Marengo Co., AL living at an Inn. No sign of his wife or children. His brother Henry and family were also in Marengo at the time, but not listed nearby.
By the time of the 1860 census William had moved all the way across the state to Barbour Co., AL.
