William Coast Conkling, son of Robert and Emily (Coast) Conkling was born on 17 August 1891 in Olean (Cataragus County), New York. The 1920 census lists his first name as Coast. On 1 January 1931 he married Doris Irene Maybee, in Olean, New York. Doris was the daughter of Casper and Grace (Thomas) Maybee. She was born on 11 December 1909 in Scio, New York. She died on 18 March 1987 in East Aurora, New York. William graduated from Yale in 1915 and was an oil producer. He died on 5 July 1937 in Buffalo (Erie County), New York and is buried at Mt. View Cemetery in Olean.
