William Chaffer was baptised on 15th May 1831 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of Sarah Chaffer, formerly Artlett, and her husband William Chaffer, an agricultural labourer. William's baptism notes that the family lived at Highleigh (then spelt Highly or Highley), and that is where the family appears in the 1841 census. The 1851 census does not give an address, but the family was still at Highleigh in 1861, so it is fair to assume that the family stayed there. By 1861, William and his father had both turned their hands to work as brickmakers.
William's mother died in 1868. He did not long outlive her. He died in 1869 aged 37 and was buried on 27th February 1869 at Sidlesham, where he had lived his whole life.
