Samuel Chaffer was baptised on 11th May 1845 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of Sarah Chaffer, formerly Artlett, and her husband William Chaffer, an agricultural labourer. He appears in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses living with his parents at Sidlesham, where they lived in the Highleigh (or Highley) area. By 1861, Samuel and his father and brother William were all working as brickmakers. Samuel's mother Sarah died in 1868, and his brother William died early in 1869, leaving Samuel the only surviving one of his parents' four sons.
A couple of months after his brother's death, Samuel married a Harriet Fullinger at Sidlesham. The 1871 census find Samuel living next door to his widowed father at Brickyard Cottage in Sidlesham. Samuel's father was by then described as a farmer of eight acres and brickmaker employing two men, one of whom was quite likely Samuel. Samuel and Harriet had several children through the late 1860s and 1870s. Samuel's father died in 1879, aged 79. The 1881 census finds Samuel and Harriet living at an unnamed farm house in Sidlesham and sees Samuel described as a farmer of eight acres, suggesting he had taken over the land his father had previously farmed. Samuel has yet to be researched after 1881.
