Sarah Artlett was born in around 1805. She consistently claimed in the censuses to have been born at Sidlesham in Sussex, although no trace of a baptism for her there has been found. One possibility is that she was the Sarah Artlett baptised on 31st January 1805 at nearby West Wittering, daughter of John and Sarah Artlett.
Sarah's first confirmed sighting is in 1825, when she married an agricultural labourer named William Chaffer at Sidlesham. Between 1831 and 1845 they had four sons baptised at Sidlesham, although their second son died as a baby, and their third son died when he was only fifteen years old.
The family lived in the Highleigh area of Sidlesham. By 1861, William and the couple's two surviving sons were working as brickmakers.
Sarah died in 1868, aged 63. She was buried at Sidlesham on 25th February 1868. William outlived her by nearly eleven years.
