William was the first sheriff of Mercer County where he had moved in 1797 and after completing his term of office he moved to Pulaski and in 1834 received the appointment of postmaster, the first of that place. According to the History of Lawrence Co., PA William Byers laid out the south side of the Village of Pulaski in 1832 and in 1833 he and Smith Byers were running the old Ault grist-mill. (who was Smith Byers?) William was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and also in the War of 1812.
