William Madison Bowling was born in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri, November 29, 1857, a son of the late Edmund Bowling and Margaret Loether Bowling. He died in St. Louis at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ellen Cleve, 4203 Labadie, St. Louis, on Tuesday, November 26, 1940, at 7:35 p.m., where he had been making his home. He was 82 years, 11 months and 27 days of age.

On October 13th he became seriously ill, but recovered fully enough to be up and about in the home. On November 20th, he was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage from which he never rallied.

The body was brought to the Cozean Funeral Home in Farmington on Wednesday where it will lie in state, where funeral services will be held Friday, November 29, which would have been his 83rd birthday, at 1:30 p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. W.P. Young and Rev. Covington of Bonne Terre. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.

Mr. Bowling was a well known farmer and lived on a farm a few miles east of Farmington until a year ago. He was widely known in this community as a man of sterling qualities. He numbered his friends by his acquaintances all of whom valued him highly as a good neighbor and a true friend.

He was married on June 19, 1879, to Mary Virginia Detchmendy, and they lived to celebrate their Golden Wedding in 1929, surrounded by their children and other relatives and friends.

He was converted and became a member of the United Baptist Church at Pleasant Hill when in young manhood. Later he moved his membership to Chestnut Ridge Missionary Baptist Church, of which he remained a faithful member.

His wife preceded him in death on November 16, 1931, and a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Wigger, died in Flat River in 1933.

Surviving are four children, Bert V. Bowling of Farmington, Mrs. Ellen Cleve and Mrs. Grace Thomure of St. Louis, and Clarence W. Bowling of Birch Tree, MO; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, John B. Bowling of Creve Couer, MO; and a sister, Mrs. Louise Thomure of Farmington, Route Three.
