Baby Toddles Into Side of Truck, Killed

William Barrett, 3, Is Victim, Fourth Death Here This Year

William Barrett, three-year-old son of Sgt. and Mrs. John Barrett, 52 Locust street, died at Mercy hospital at 6 o'clock Thursday night from injuries received when he was struck by a truck driven by M.E. Becker, 351 1/2 Dorgan place, about 5:30 Thursday afternoon. It was the fourth traffic fatality of the year in Dubuque and eighth in Dubuque county.

The accident occurred in front of the Barrett home. The lad had been playing with a group of children in a vacant lot across the street from his home.

Was Called for Supper

His mother called him for supper, according to the police report, and he crossed the street safely, but, jesting with his mother, he walked backwards into the middle of the street and into the side of the Becker truck, falling under the rear wheels, officers said they were told.

When the truck came to a stop, the boy was under the rear wheel. He was rushed to Mercy hospital, where he died 30 minutes later. Investigation exonerated the driver.

He was born in Dubuque Oct. 8, 1941. His father in serving with the US Seventh army in Germany.

Funeral Saturday

Surviving besides his parents are three sisters, Shirley, Joyce and Joan Barrett, and one brother, John Barrett, Jr., all at home; his grandmother, Mrs. Rose Barrett, Dubuque, his grandfather, Henry Lebben, Dubuque; his great-grandmother, Mrs. John Lebben, Dubuque, and several aunts and uncles.

The body is at the Haudenshied funeral home, 1258 Main street. The funeral will be held from the funeral home at 1:30 Saturday afternoon to St. John's Lutheran church at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran cemetery.

Another Child Hurt

Mary Jane Kammer, seven-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Kammer, 735 Loras boulevard, suffered an injured left foot and leg, about 8:30 Friday morning when she was struck by an automobile driven by Mrs. Anna Sutter, 2272 Bennett street.

The accident occurred in front of the Kammer home. Investigating police said that Mrs. Sutter was driving west on the street and the girl ran out into the street and into the path of the car.

Mrs. Sutter took the child to Finley hospital in her car, accompanied by the girl's mother.
