Lived in Stewart Co, TN from at least 1811 to 1840 along with various family members. Minutes of the Court from Feb 1829 note “Ordered that Charles Roper be overseer of road leading from the mouth of William R. Atkins' spring branch to the cross road where said road intersects with Francis' new mill road and that the following hands work: James Hogan and hands, William Hooks, William Weaks' hands, William S. Atkins, Joseph Lewis, William Grice, Samuel Neely, Jesse Atkins, Edward Smith, William Smith and Charles McHenry.” This would seem to indicate that there were two separate William’s, and that they knew enough to use initials to distinguish them. Both men are on the same page in the 1840 census.

William owned a ferry on the Cumberland River prior to January 1844, when the County Court minutes refer to him as the “former owner” of the ferry. He may have sold out and left, as he bought land in Jefferson Co, AR in 1845.

The first of his family bibles was purchased in 1812 and has the births of eight of his children, plus 17 entries on the front flyleaf that appear to be the names of slaves. The second bible, which includes full names of all the children, plus marriages and deaths, was printed in 1831.
