Facts and Events
Capt Willem Schuiling was born November 3th.1896 in ANLOO in HOLLAND.
After following for some years the lessons at the Royal Naval Trainingschool in DEN HELDER,(KIM),Willem was promoted on August 10th.1922 to First Lieutenant Royal Dutch Marines.
February 16th.1932 Willem was promoted to Captain.
May 10th.1940,when the Germans started the War against Holland and German Parachutists landed near the Bridges in the Harbourtown ROTTERDAM,Captain Willem SCHUILING and His Marines Platoon have been in hand-to-hand Combats and a life-or-death struggle untill May 13th. with the Germans.
The Germans called the Marines "Black Devils", in the First place because their Braverty and the Black Uniforms they carried.
After a lot of Germans Airplanes throwed their heavy Bombs on the Town,killing many Civilians, the DUTCH finished the War and showed the White Flag to surrender so that not more innocent people should be killed.
Captain Schuiling was deported to a Concentration Camp NEU BRANDENBURG in GERMANY where He died December 22th.1944.
After the War Captain SCHUILING is buried in the middle of His fallen Marines on the Cemetery "CROOSWIJK" in ROTTERDAM.
On 10 May 1946, he recieved the highest Dutch Militairy Decoration the "MWO"- The militairy Williams Order.
The Royal Dutch Navy have named a minesweeping vessel Hr. Ms. Schuiling in honor of Willem Schuiling, although this ship still sails, it's no longer ( 21 januari 1983 )in active duty as a navy vessel.
