Mrs. James Maitland died at the home of her son George, in Sycamore, Wednesday, September 12, after an illness of ten days from cholera morbus.
Sarah Renwick was born in Johnstown Parish, Scotland, April 16, 1822. At the age of 13 she came with her parents to Canada. On March 9, 1841, she was united in marriage to James Maitland, and with him came to DeKalb county in November, 1868. Mr. Maitland died May 7, 1875, and since that time she had resided in Sycamore.
To Mr. and Mrs. Maitland were born fifteen children, eleven of whom survive them. The children are: Mrs. John Allen of Trenton, Canada; James Maitland, Sycamore; Mrs. Arthur Mead, Elgin; Walter, Robert, George, Sycamore; Herbert, Hitchcock, Dakota; Henry, Sycamore; William, Brighton, Canada; Thomas, Messervy, Iowa; and Mrs. Theodore Weitzel, Sycamore.
Deceased was highly esteemed by her neighbors for many noble traits of character. Forty years ago she united with the Presbyterian church. She was one of seven sisters, and is the first of the number to be called by death.
The funeral was from the Methodist church, Friday morning, at half past ten, the services being in charge of Rev. A. T. Horn. The interment was in the cemetery at Ohio Grove.

Herbert Maitland, 84, former Sycamore resident, died Wednesday atmidnight at his home near Aitkin, Minn. He became ill Sunday night, andwas taken to the hospital in Grainard, Minn., where he was subjected tosurgery on Monday.
Herbert Maitland was one of sixteen children born to James and SarahMaitland in Canada on July 3, 1860. The family moved to rural Sycamorein 1868 and settled there on a farm east of the 8tark's Corner now knownas Engh's Corner.
Mr. Maitland attended the rural schools of Sycamore township and as ayoung man helped on farms. He was married to 1892 and at the age of 30moved to Dakota where he was engaged In farming for 15 years, later.moving to Minnesota and purchased » farm eight miles from Aitkin. He hasraided there WBT since.
In 1942, Mr. and Mrs. Maitland celebrated - their golden weddinganniversary. About six years ago he visited relatives in Sycamore andGenoa.
Surviving besides his widow, Nellie are three sons, James of Oregon,Ralph and Herbert Henry at home; two brothers, Thomas of Nashua, Ia.,and Harry of Genoa and one sister, Mrs. William (Sarah) Beardsley ofGenoa.
Preceding him in death was one son Ralph, who died In camp during WorldWar I in U. S.; two brothers and two sisters in Canada and six brothers,John of Bay City, Mich.; William of Coburg (sic), Canada; James,LaPlata, Mo.; Robert, Klemie, la.; Walter on May 10, and George July 16both of Sycamore this year.
Funeral services and burial were held in Aitkin, Minn., this Friday.

Walter Maitland, esteemed resident of this community for some 70 years passed away Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock at the Elgin State hospital, following an illness of three months which had confined him closely to his bed.
Mr. Maitland was one of a family of 16 children and was born in Canada on January 14, 1855 the son of James and Sarah Maitland. He moved to Sycamore with his parents when but 14 years old and has resided here ever since. On March 6, 1880, he was united in marriage to Evaline Duck of DeKalb. To this union were born two children, Mrs. Mabel Zwiger of Rockford and Arthur J. Maitland, also a resident of Rockford. The deceased's kindly attributes of character have won for him many friends down through the years. Mrs. Maitland preceded him in death four years ago.
Surviving him, are his son and daughter also four brothers, George of Sycamore, Herbert of Minnesota; Henry of Genoa and Thomas of Iowa, a sister Mrs. Anna Beardsley of Genoa and four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held this Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Kebil Funeral Home with the Rev. H. L. Michael of the local Federated church officiating. He was laid to rest in the Ohio Grove cemetery beside his wife.
