    Walter Maitland, esteemed resident of this community for some 70 years passed away Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock at the Elgin State hospital, following an illness of three months which had confined him closely to his bed.

    Mr. Maitland was one of a family of 16 children and was born in Canada on January 14, 1855 the son of James and Sarah Maitland. He moved to Sycamore with his parents when but 14 years old and has resided here ever since. On March 6, 1880, he was united in marriage to Evaline Duck of DeKalb. To this union were born two children, Mrs. Mabel Zwiger of Rockford and Arthur J. Maitland, also a resident of Rockford. The deceased's kindly attributes of character have won for him many friends down through the years. Mrs. Maitland preceded him in death four years ago.

    Surviving him, are his son and daughter also four brothers, George of Sycamore, Herbert of Minnesota; Henry of Genoa and Thomas of Iowa, a sister Mrs. Anna Beardsley of Genoa and four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held this Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Kebil Funeral Home with the Rev. H. L. Michael of the local Federated church officiating. He was laid to rest in the Ohio Grove cemetery beside his wife.

    Mrs. Walter Maitland Dies in Her Home Monday Night; Funeral Services to be Held on Thursday, Burial in Ohio Grove.

    Mrs. Walter Maitland, 82 years old, a resident of Sycamore or Sycamore community all her life, esteemed and well liked, died in her home at 603 DeKalb avenue, shortly after 8 o'clock Monday evening. She had been ill for approximately three weeks, but had been ailing for several years.

    Born in Burlington

    Evaline Duck, daughter of Simon and Anne Duck, natives of Scarborough, England, was born in Burlington township, January 13, 1858. The family moved to Sycamore township when she was a baby. She was married to Walter Maitland March 6, 1880. They moved to Iowa that year, settling in Boone county. They returned one year later. Mr. Maitland returned in a covered wagon, but Mrs. Maitland, being ill, came home on a train.

    Mrs. Maitland belonged to no church and to no clubs. She was a hard working, home loving body, greatly devoted to her husband and family. Of a friendly disposition; she acquired many friends. As age grew upon her, she lost some of her activity, but kept her interest in her family and in her home to the last.

    She is survived by her husband; one son, Arthur of Rockford; one daughter, Mrs. Mabel Zwiger, also of Rockford; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

    Services will be held from the Kebil funeral home at 2 o'clock on Thursday afternoon, the Rev. H. L. Michael officiating, with burial in Ohio Grove cemetery.
