Mrs. James Maitland died at the home of her son George, in Sycamore, Wednesday, September 12, after an illness of ten days from cholera morbus.
Sarah Renwick was born in Johnstown Parish, Scotland, April 16, 1822. At the age of 13 she came with her parents to Canada. On March 9, 1841, she was united in marriage to James Maitland, and with him came to DeKalb county in November, 1868. Mr. Maitland died May 7, 1875, and since that time she had resided in Sycamore.
To Mr. and Mrs. Maitland were born fifteen children, eleven of whom survive them. The children are: Mrs. John Allen of Trenton, Canada; James Maitland, Sycamore; Mrs. Arthur Mead, Elgin; Walter, Robert, George, Sycamore; Herbert, Hitchcock, Dakota; Henry, Sycamore; William, Brighton, Canada; Thomas, Messervy, Iowa; and Mrs. Theodore Weitzel, Sycamore.
Deceased was highly esteemed by her neighbors for many noble traits of character. Forty years ago she united with the Presbyterian church. She was one of seven sisters, and is the first of the number to be called by death.
The funeral was from the Methodist church, Friday morning, at half past ten, the services being in charge of Rev. A. T. Horn. The interment was in the cemetery at Ohio Grove.

George Emery Maitland, well known and esteemed resident of this community for many years, passed away Sunday at the local hospital, where he had been a patient but five days.
Mr. Maitland was born to Calbourne (sic,) Canada, on July 19, 1858. His parents were of Scotch descent. He came to Sycamore some 76 years ago and has resided here ever since, with the exception of several years which he spent In Waukegan, when he operated an auto body and fender shop. For 50 years he was employed as a carpenter by A. E. Root and other carpenter contractors in Sycamore. On August 27, 1890, he was united in marriage to Cora E. Butts, who has preceded him in death
The decedent was especially devoted to his home and family members. He was ambitious and was the most contented when at work. Despite his advanced age be was active up to within a few days of his death, Mr. Maitland was friendly and kind to his fellowmen and will be missed by many. He was a member of the First Baptist church here for years, also a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for the past 50 years.
Surviving him are his children: Mrs. H. M. Jones, Waukegan: Mrs. Carl Ecklund, Rockford; George Maitland Jr., Sycamore; Lester, Sycamore; also five grandchildren and six great grandchildren, three brothers, Herbert of Aitkln. Minn., Henry of Genoa; Thomas of Nashua, lowa, and a sister. Mrs. William Beardsley of Genoa.
Final rites are to to be accorded on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Kebil Funeral Home and at 2:30 o'clock from the local First Baptist church with the Rev. M. W. Johnson officiating. Interment will take place In the Elmwood Cemetery here.

Herbert Maitland, 84, former Sycamore resident, died Wednesday at midnight at his home near Aitkin, Minn. He became ill Sunday night, and was taken to the hospital in Grainard, Minn., where he was subjected to surgery on Monday.
Herbert Maitland was one of sixteen children born to James and Sarah Maitland in Canada on July 3, 1860. The family moved to rural Sycamore in 1868 and settled there on a farm east of the 8tark's Corner now known as Engh's Corner.
Mr. Maitland attended the rural schools of Sycamore township and as a young man helped on farms. He was married to 1892 and at the age of 30 moved to Dakota where he was engaged In farming for 15 years, later. moving to Minnesota and purchased » farm eight miles from Aitkin. He has raided there WBT since.
In 1942, Mr. and Mrs. Maitland celebrated - their golden wedding anniversary. About six years ago he visited relatives in Sycamore and Genoa.
Surviving besides his widow, Nellie are three sons, James of Oregon, Ralph and Herbert Henry at home; two brothers, Thomas of Nashua, Ia., and Harry of Genoa and one sister, Mrs. William (Sarah) Beardsley of Genoa.
Preceding him in death was one son Ralph, who died In camp during World War I in U. S.; two brothers and two sisters in Canada and six brothers, John of Bay City, Mich.; William of Coburg (sic), Canada; James, LaPlata, Mo.; Robert, Klemie, la.; Walter on May 10, and George July 16 both of Sycamore this year.
Funeral services and burial were held in Aitkin, Minn., this Friday.

Member of Pioneer Family of Sycamore Community Dies After Lingering Illness in LaPlata, Mo. -- Funeral Will Be In This City -- Leaves Wife, Two Sons
James Maitland, one of the early pioneer residents of this community, died Sunday at LaPlata, Mo., after a lingering illness. He was 83 years of age. Funeral services were held this Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Maitland's nephew, Charles Lee, 265 DeKalb avenue, this city. Rev. A. W, Mohns, of this city, officiated. Burial was in Elmwood cemetery.
James Maitland was born in Darlington, Canada, Feb. 28, 1849. His father, James Maitland, 8r. was a Highlander, born in Argyleshire, Scotland, and emigrated to Canada in 1835, locating near Darlington. His mother was Miss Sarah Renwick. She was born in Scotland and came with her parents to Darlington, Canada. She died in Sycamore Sept. 12, I894.
When Mr. Maitland was five years of age his parents moved to Colburn, Canada, where he attended school until about the age of 14 years when the family moved to. a farm nearby and then to 1888 came to Illinois. Mr. Maitland arrived in Malta in November of that year and worked far one year on a farm. He came to Sycamore three years later and worked a hay press and later ran a threshing machine. He was married in Sycamore, Oct. 14, 1874, to Miss Ada L. Stark, a native of DeKalb county, and a daughter of Marshall Stark. To this union were born two children, Howard Henry, who died at the age of four years, and Everitt P. Maitland. They adopted one of the sons of Harmon M, Stark, the eldest brother of Mrs. Maitland.
Soon after his marriage Mr. Maitland began fanning one mile north of Sycamore on a farm of his father-in- law's. Removing to Kingston he there engaged In farming two years, years (sic). He bought a farm In 1892 on the Mt. Hunger road. The farm is now owned by Ed. Carlson.
The community deeply regretted when about 20 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Maitland moved to LaPlata. Mo., where their son, Everitt, was a practicing veterinarian. Mr. Maitland is survived by his wife, his son, Everitt, and adopted son, Herbert Stark, all of LaPlata: five grand-children, two sisters, Mrs., W. C, Beardsley of Sycamore and Mrs. Janet Meade of Boston, Mass., and six brothers, Walter of Sycamore, Robert of Garner, Ia., George of Sycamore, Herbert of Arthur, Minn., Henry of Belmond, Ia., and Thomas of Nashua, Ia.
