Facts and Events
Walter Scott joined Capt. Featherston's company, Co. "H" of the 5th Regiment of Mississippi Volunteers (infantry) at Enterprise, Miss on 18 Oct 1861. He was paid $16.50 for his one month and fifteen days ($11 per month for a private) and discharged on 2 Dec 1861 at Warrenton, Fla "by reason of inability to perform military duty," presumably wounded in the battles around Pensacola, Fla. Described as a farmer, 17 years old, 5 feet, 5 inches, light complexion, blue eyes and light hair. W. S. appears on the roll of Fant's company of Home Guards of Noxubee County on 2 May 1863 (apparently the only documentation of Fant's company). According to A Sketch of Harvey's Scouts, formerly of Jackson's Cavalry Division, Army of Tennessee, written by J. F. H. Claiborne, there was a Private W. Eckford in Harvey's Scouts. "The scouts consisted originally of twenty-five men selected from Wirt Adam's regiment of cavalry. . ." Adam's Calvary is the unit where James W. was 1st sergeant. References
