Facts and Events
Walter Creasey was born about 1754, the sixth known child of George Creasey and Mary Card. Walter was baptised 24 Apr 1754 at the parish church in East Grinstead, Sussex, England, where his parents had married and his siblings were also baptised. Walter was a "family name" in the Card family - his mother had a brother named Walter and her grandfather was also named Gualter (Walter) Card. It's not known exactly when all Walter's grandparents died but it's most likely they all died before Walter was born. Walter's father George had a brother named Ninion Creasy who had granddaughters baptised in East Grinstead around the time Walter was baptised so he may have grown up with 1st cousins once removed on his father's side. At this stage it's not known whether Walter had any cousins on his mother's side. Walter had 5 elder siblings named John, Anne, Katherine, Mary, and George. After Walter was born his parents had two more sons, Edward and Thomas. There was a six-year gap between the baptisms of Mary and George which may indicate the birth of a child whose baptism record hasn't yet been found. Walter was one of the witnesses at the wedding of his younger brother Edward to Mary Collins in East Grinstead in 1779. Apart from this nothing else is known for certain about what became of Walter's siblings, but Katherine may have married John Hills in Worth in 1761, George may have married Mary Burt in Ardingly in 1779, and youngest sibling Thomas may have married Priscilla Smith in Rusper in 1789. There is also a possible marriage for eldest sibling John marrying Ann Edsaw in Ewhurst, Surrey, in 1761 however it seems more likely that he was the infant buried in East Grinstead in 1741. More evidence is needed to prove these marriage records aren't for other people with similar names. Walter's father George died in East Grinstead in 1775 aged in his mid-60s and was buried in East Grinstead. It's not yet known when Walter's mother Mary died but there are possible burial records in 1783, 1786, and 1796. Walter was living in East Grinstead when he married Ann Aldridge of the parish of Laughton, Sussex, on 11 August 1776 in the parish church in East Grinstead. It's not currently known who Ann's parents were or how Walter came to marry someone from a parish 20 miles away. Walter and Ann had 8 children all baptised in East Grinstead:
In all Walter had 29 grandchildren. Walter died in 1828 at the age of 74 and was buried on 6 Jun in East Grinstead. [edit] Geographical and Historical ContextEast Grinstead has been an important market town since the early middle ages. St. Swithun's Church was rebuilt after it was struck by lightning in 1772. Near the entrance to the church, stones mark the supposed ashes of three martyrs who were burned on 18 July 1556 during the reign of Mary I because they refused to renounce the Protestant faith. Walter was born during the reign of George II. He lived through the reign of George III and died during the reign of George IV.
